STD/STI Testing

Nearly 20 million STIs (sexually transmitted infections) occur in the United States each year. Talking to a healthcare provider about STIs—also called STDs—may be uncomfortable, but it is an important conversation to have for anyone who is sexually active. STD testing is not a part of most routine exams and blood work, so you must ask for it specifically. Our board-certified physicians can help you determine which tests are right for you.

What is an STI?

A Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI, sometimes referred to as a sexually transmitted disease or STD) is an infection passed from 1 person to another through sexual contact.

STIs are serious illnesses that require treatment. If you have any STI symptoms, it's important to be tested and treated as soon as possible to avoid spreading the infection.

Our clinic providers can review the results of urine or blood tests that are ordered and collected by an outside lab to determine if you have an STI.  We can also provide a treatment recommendation, which may include treatment and/or a prescription.

STI Common Questions

  • What illnesses are associated with STI screening?

    • Bacterial vaginosis
    • Chlamydia
    • Gonorrhea
    • Hepatitis
    • Herpes
    • HIV/AIDS
    • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
    • Pelvic inflammatory Disease (PID)
    • Syphilis
    • Trichomoniasis
    • Other STIs: Chancroid, scabies, etc.
  • What symptoms can occur with an STI?

Symptoms of an STI can affect the mouth, and genitals, and pain during urination or sexual intercourse.  Frequently, there are no symptoms at all.  Common STI symptoms include:

    • A burning sensation when urinating, or frequent urination (needing to pee often)
    • Flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue body aches, swollen lymph glands and fatigue
    • Itching, irritation, swelling or pain in the vagina, vulva, penis or anus
    • Rashes
    • Sores or bumps on and around the mouth, genitals, thighs or buttocks
    • Unusual discharge from the vagina or penis

These symptoms may also indicate conditions other than STIs, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or yeast infection, which require different treatment approaches.

  • How are STIs treated?

Early detection and treatment are the most effective. STIs caused by bacteria require treatment with antibiotics. Viral infections can be managed with medicines but not always cured. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in preventing transmission to others.

Treatment usually consists of 1 of the following methods:

    • Antibiotics: Often, a single dose can cure a bacterial or parasitic infection. Abstain from sex for 7 days after you've completed antibiotic treatment, and all sores have healed.
    • Antiviral drugs: Treatments for herpes and HIV. Although they can keep infections in check for years, you will still carry the virus and can transmit it to a partner by having unprotected sex.

  • How can I prevent STIs?

There are ways you can protect yourself from getting an STI. Some reliable methods of STD prevention are:

    • Abstain from sexual contact: This is the most reliable way of avoiding infection.
    • Practice mutual monogamy: Be sexually active with only 1 partner, who agrees to be only sexually active with you.
    • Reduce your number of sex partners: This can decrease the risk of STIs. It's still essential for you and your sexual partner(s) to get screened and share the test results.
    • Use condoms: Consistent and correct use of the male latex condom is highly effective in reducing the transmission of STIs. For those with latex allergies, synthetic condoms are available.
    • Vaccination: Vaccines designed to prevent hepatitis B  and HPV are available.
  • Which Sexually Transmitted Diseases Are Detected In an STD Screening?

There isn’t a single test that checks for all STDs. Individual STD screenings are available for common sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, HIV, and hepatitis. Your provider will determine which tests you need based on your symptoms and history.

  • What can I expect during an STD check?

Most tests can be performed quickly and cause little if any, discomfort. Most screenings involve providing a sample of urine or blood or a cheek swab. Depending on the circumstances, the provider may also perform a physical exam or take a sample of cells or discharge from any lesions or the genitals.
